WMPO - Section - Contemporary Photography

For the Contemporary Photography category, we are seeking works that represent contemporary photography as a form of artistic expression. We invite entries that take innovative and experimental approaches that push the boundaries of traditional photography.  

Characteristics for Contemporary Photography:

1. Creative Concepts:

   - Photographs that address social, cultural, or personal issues and offer new perspectives.  

   Narratives that tell a story or provoke thought through visual means. 

2. Experimental Techniques:

   Unusual compositions, camera angles, or lighting. 

Combining photography with digital or analogue manipulation. 

3. Mixed Media:

   Photographs combined with other art forms, such as painting, graphic design or collage. Works that incorporate layering, texture or abstract elements to add a new dimension.

4. Capturing the spirit of the times:

Images that reflect current trends, technologies or social changes.  

   - Projects that explore the interfaces between photography, the environment and technology. 

5. AI-generated works:

   - Photographs created or edited using artificial intelligence (AI) are explicitly allowed.  

   - Prerequisite: clear creative input from the artist and an aesthetically convincing realisation.  

6. Aesthetics and emotionality: 

   - Images that achieve a strong emotional impact through minimalism, surrealism or abstraction.  

   - Works that impress through colour composition, pattern or structure.  

Examples of topics:

- Urban spaces and modern architecture  

- Environment and sustainability  

- Identity, diversity and inclusion  

- Technological influences and digital transformation  

- The fleeting nature of time and memory
